Iowa State has done very well in Cincinnati, Ohio, since head coach Matt Campbell took over in Ames. Campbell’s staff is of course back in the area and recently offered a Class of 2018 offensive lineman.

Sycamore junior Tate Goodyear last Monday secured his first Power-5 offer to go along with several Ivy League and G5 offers, after a pair of Cyclone assistants made their way to his school in recent weeks.

“Earlier in the month, Coach (Bryan) Gasser came to the school and I talked to him for a while,” said Goodyear, who is being recruited to play either offensive guard or center. “He seemed really interested, told me they were going to be at (Mount St. Joseph University) on June 3rd and that I should come down for the camp.

“Then they said Coach (Tom) Manning, the offensive line coach, was going to come down and watch lifting and drills. We did that and it kind of picked up a little bit after that. The following night, he told me to call him and I ended up getting an offer.”

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Goodyear scored high marks during Manning’s evaluation, and said ISU’s offensive coordinator leveled with him about where the staff is in the recruiting process.

“The coaches have said they’re probably taking three offensive linemen, one tackle and two inside guys,” Goodyear said. “They really think I could be a valuable inside guy. Coach Manning talked a lot about his history of developing players and getting them to play at the highest level, which is very important to me. When Coach Manning came to watch me lift, he wanted to see whether or not I could bend, what I could do and how coachable I was. I think it went very well.”

Goodyear said Manning and the rest of the group in Ames have made quite an impression since picking up on his trail.

“Coach Manning is fantastic and has done a lot of real special things with coaching the offensive line, even back to his days at Toledo,” Goodyear said. “I know the history of the coaching staff and how they were at Toledo and turned the program around. It’s an amazing coaching staff. They’ve sent me a lot of stuff about their campus and it looks absolutely beautiful.”

The fact ISU has put a lot of effort into recruiting his area has not gone unnoticed for Goodyear, who said he knows all of the recruits that have signed with the program the past two years.

“I know a lot of those guys very well,” Goodyear said. “I go to the same trainer as David Montgomery and we played him the first game of his senior year, so I know him fairly well. I know (Deshaunte and Keontae) Jones pretty well and have built a connection there. I’m also fairly close with (2017 signee) Dan Sichterman and got to know him at various camps we attended. They have all said Iowa State is a fantastic place.”

The soon-to-be rising senior could get two more opportunities in the near future to build even better relationships with I-State.

“I’m going to try to take my parents out to Iowa State this summer to take a very seriously look at it, and am trying to work out that June 3rd date for their (satellite) camp because I’d love to get down there and work with Coach Manning,” Goodyear said.
