Sounds like Chip Kelly will be available after December. Throw enough money out there and everyone would know you're serious. And the recruits would know who he is, and no parent would slam the door on him. And he wouldn't back away from a Stoops showdown. Or Briles. We continuously hire guys with no head coaching experience, and expect them to win against the best/most experienced guys in the business. Clone basketball was nothing till we hired JO. He had had success in the fishbowl of Michigan before coming to State. So call up Chip Kelly and ask him who the best coach is that we can get for $5 million. Know who his best assistants have been, and maybe he'll surprise you and say I'll take that job. Just throwing out numbers, but if Memphis can put $3 mill out there, then we should be able to take our place in the power 5, and put out enough to get a proven coach. I know Kelly is crazy talk, but if we want to win against the most successful coaches in the business, we better find one with an equal resume. Or go tell CPR to come back, we made a bad mistake.
The best decade of ISU football was led by Johnny Majors, who had no head coaching experience before ISU, and Earle Bruce who led Tampa to a bowl game in his only year there before ISU. But both came from a culture of success. Majors got the ball moving for a new stadium, and Bruce moved into it. Both left because we weren't big time enough to pony up. (and other contributing factors)
The (arguably) worst decade+ of ISU football was led by Jim Criner and Jim Walden, finished by the first 5 years of Dan McCarney, guys used to doing more with less, but not up to the competition of the big 8. And no support from the administration.
Maybe the guys on Paul's hot board can get it done, some are really up and comers, but do they really know how to prepare for the OU athletes going for a home run on the first play from scrimmage? And if not, are we going another 25 years before beating OU? Cause we either need to figure out how to beat OU, TCU, Baylor, KSU and OSU, or just quit bitching about CPR's sideline strategy.
