A versatile Class of 2017 athlete from the state of Illinois took an unofficial visit to Iowa State last Thursday and feels he is in good position to pick up an offer in the coming months.
Naperville Neuqua Valley junior Owen Piche took the trip to Ames with his parents and was on hand for a spring practice.
“That was my first time at Iowa State and I liked everything I saw,” said Piche, who currently has offers from the likes of Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Illinois State, New Mexico and Toledo.
“Everything was top-notch and I walked away really impressed. The coaches were amazing and took a lot of time out of their day. We watched the practice in the indoor facility and after that I talked with some of the coaches. We went around, toured the entire campus and checked out a lot of different buildings. We checked out the football facilities and through the stadium and locker rooms. We got that entire tour.”
Following the practice, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Piche spent some time with a pair of I-State coaches and got a feel for where he stands with the staff.
“I sat down with Coach (Tyson) Veidt for about 20 minutes and then me and my parents met with Coach (Matt) Campbell for about 30 minutes,” Piche said. “We talked a lot about the recruiting process and where they are with me right now. They walked me through what they liked about me, what I do well and what they noticed.”
Piche said he believes that first Power-5 offer is well within his reach.
“I’m a little light right now and am focused on getting my weight where it needs to be,” he said. “(Iowa State) want me to play linebacker for them. For them to offer me they want me to be at 205 to 210 pounds, so in their program they could get me up to about 225 to 235 pounds. They want to make sure they’re making the right decision and that it will be the right fit.”
In the coming weeks and months, Piche hopes to make that move. ISU will be at his school during the spring evaluation period and will get another read on his progress.
“They’re going to make a stop by my high school later this month to watch me lift,” he said.
Piche has close ties with ISU redshirt freshman linebacker Bobby McMillen, who is also from the western Chicago suburbs. McMillen’s father coached Piche in youth football, and then Piche and the younger McMillen faced each other during high school.
