Iowa State got a good evaluation of a Chicago (Ill.) defensive lineman at a camp in Ames over the summer, and the Class of 2018 recruit has followed that up with a solid junior season, so the coaching staff made an offer last month.

Marist standout defensive tackle prospect Gavin McCabe’s offer from the Cyclones was his first at the time, and Central Michigan has since followed suit with one of its own.

“Last year they came to one of my workouts and I started talking to the coaches. I went to a camp this summer and they said they liked the first couple games of my season, watched my film and said they’d be in touch,” said McCabe, who attended the Saturday Night Lights camp in late-June.

“They got in touch and I talked to Coach (Matt) Campbell. He was the man who offered me. It was my first offer and was really a blessing. I worked my butt all off-season and it was a relief that all my hard work paid off.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound McCabe said the coaches took notice of what he brought to the table along the defensive front.

“They love the way I’ve been playing lately and love my motor,” McCabe said. “All of the coaches watched my film and thought it was a good idea to offer me. I’ve also talked to Coach Rasheed a couple times and he was impressed with my film.”

Having the opportunity to get an offer kid on campus at such an early stage was also a positive for the Cyclones, who made a good impression on McCabe.

“Me and a couple of my friends went down there for the camp and it was really an awesome experience,” McCabe said. “I really liked Iowa State, loved the campus, loved the city, loved all the coaches and the facility was awesome. It was a great place to be and I fell in love with it.”

Since making the offer last month, I-State coaches have remained in touch with McCabe on a consistent basis.

“I’ve been talking to Coach (Eli) Rasheed a lot, as well as the recruiting coordinator and a few other coaches,” McCabe said. “They’ve been sending me some letters. They’ve been keeping in touch lately.”

McCabe said he is targeting an unofficial visit for either the Texas Tech or West Virginia games.
