An in-state outside linebacker with an offer from the Cyclones took an unofficial visit to Ames on Saturday before participating in the Saturday Night Lights camp.

Cedar Falls rising junior Jack Campbell said he enjoyed the whole experience and attention giving to he and his mother by the coaching staff.

“My mom and I came down about Noon and they took us on a tour of everything,” said Campbell. “That was really cool. They showed us the student center and dorms. They actually let me meet the kids and go into their dorms. It meant a lot because Coach (Matt) Campbell, Coach (Tyson) Veidt and Coach (Derek) Hoodjer went with us.

“At camp, I just wanted to prove my point that I’m the best player out here. I’m humble but you’ve got to have the mentality that you’re the best.”

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Campbell met with the Cyclones’ head coach and other staffers, and got some good feedback.

“They shared with me that I have a passion like no other kid that they’ve seen before,” Campbell said. “I love the game of football and am a great leader. It’s not really even about my game, but about the character details that are simple. I definitely like it here. Me and almost all of the coaches, our relationships are pretty strong because I met them today.”

On the field, Campbell worked with different groups of players throughout the day, but seemed to get showcased more with the linebackers as opposed to defensive linemen. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Class of 2019 prospect said his future position is still up in the air.

“It depends on how much I grow to see where I play, but I’ll play anywhere,” Campbell said. “I feel most comfortable at outside linebacker and I like to rush the passer. I feel like I can play defensive end as well.”

The camp wrapped up in Jack Trice Stadium for one-on-ones, an experience that Campbell said he won’t soon forget.

“That was pretty cool,” he said. “I’ve been to camps where we have never actually been in the stadium. That meant a lot. Even if I was just a camper, and not being recruited, that would mean a lot to me because they care enough to let you on the game field.”

During the Cyclones’ preseason workouts, Campbell said he is planning another visit to Ames.

“I think I’ll come up here during (training) camp when they put the pads on, just to see what it’s like,” he said. “If I go here, I want to know what the intensity is going to be and what my position is going to be like.”

In addition to his offers from I-State, Iowa and UNI, Campbell said he’s hearing from Minnesota, Penn State and North Dakota State. Given the fact he won’t be signing until the Class of 2019, he’s not in any hurry to make a decision.

“Like Coach Campbell said, don’t rush it and when you’re 50 years old this decision is going to affect you. I like it here,” he said. “Time will tell.”
