A multi-dimensional defensive back says Iowa State is heavily pursuing him for the 2020 class and that Ames will be a visit destination in the near future.

Cedar Hill (Texas) Trinity Christian athlete Marques Buford ranks the Cyclones very highly and said he speaks with his lead recruiter on a regular basis.

“They’re definitely in my top-five schools right now,” said Buford. “Me and Coach (D.K.) McDonald talk heavily, about every day. He’s really excited to be recruiting me. It’s casual conversations, just checking in and seeing how each other’s days are going. Coach McDonald has made an excellent impression. I love him and my parents love him.

“I can’t wait to get up there to meet him and the rest of the coaching staff. I’m supposed to be taking an unofficial visit up there on July 29th. I just want to get a chance to talk to the rest of the coaching staff and also see the facilities and talk to some of the players to see how they like it.”

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Buford also has Power-5 offers from Rutgers and Syracuse, to go along with several others in the G5 ranks. He is a three-star prospect with a 5.5 Rivals rating.

He says I-State has as good a chance of any of those programs at getting a commitment from him.

“I see that they’re on the come-up,” Buford said. “They finished towards the top of the Big 12 last year and played against some very tough teams. That was eye-opening to me. They haven’t really rushed me into committing or anything. They’re letting me go through the process and haven’t given me any deadlines or an idea of how many they’re signing at my position.”

Head coach Matt Campbell and his staff have sought out defensive backs with the potential to play anywhere and Buford said he fits that mold of player.

“They’re recruiting me to play cornerback or safety,” he said. “Coach McDonald likes how versatile I am as a player and I can do different things and not stuck in one position. A lot of DBs say they’re either a corner or a safety, but I can play both and move around inside and outside the box.”

Buford said he also plays in a defense that would make transitioning to ISU’s system easier.

“It’s exactly like the one my school plays; they run the same 4-2-5,” Buford said. “Their DBs are used in a lot of different ways and don’t just cover or stop the run. They equally do both and play outside and inside.”

The Lone Star State prospect, who visited Georgia Tech last month, says he will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for a stop two days prior to Iowa State.
