A Class of 2021 wide receiver from central Iowa has emerged as a borderline four-star player by Rivals and says he’s planning at least a few trips up the interstate to Ames this season.
Ankeny rising junior Brody Brecht earned his first football offer of any kind from Iowa State over the winter and has taken a pair of visits to Ames. His next two will come during the 2019 season.
“I’m going to try to get up there for a few of their games,” said Brecht. “That’s the plan right now. I don’t know the specific games yet. Iowa State is a great program and they have a great coaching staff. They’re a player-led team and the players are very good and take good leadership. I’m excited to keep learning more.”
At 6-foot-4 and 193 pounds, Brecht certainly has the frame the I-State staff looks for in the wide receiver position. He led the Hawks with 30 catches for 513 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore. Brecht has been a varsity starter at the Class 4A level since his freshman year.
He says a pair of coaches have taken the biggest role in his recruitment thus far.
“I talk to Coach (Nate) Scheelhaase and Coach (Derek) Hoodjer the most,” Brecht said. “They like my frame and want me up there as a part of the offense, because they use their receivers a lot. With Hakeem Butler and Allen Lazard, they were big receivers too.”
A system led by a brilliant sophomore quarterback in Brock Purdy has also caught the Ankeny receiver’s attention.
“I really like the offense and they get the receivers involved a lot,” Brecht said. “They take a lot of shots and want to move the ball down the field. With the receiver depth chart, they have some good talent right there. Purdy is very good with his abilities to throw and run the ball. They’re going to be pretty good.”
When Brecht makes it to Ames during the upcoming season it will be his first trip up there since June, when he made an unofficial visit. He said that visit was all about football, as he watched the team during summer conditioning.
“I just liked sitting down with the coaches, liked talking with them and seeing what their program is about,” he said. “I watched the players work out. I watched the freshmen work out and how their workout was when they got there. They told me about the new football facility that’s being built and that’s exciting.”
A borderline four-star prospect, Brecht has been assigned a 5.7 Rivals rating. He also has football offers from Iowa and William & Mary. Brecht is also an intriguing baseball prospect as a pitcher, possessing a fastball that sits in the low-to-mid 90s. He has an offer from Iowa and interest from Florida State.
