It appears that, to date at least, we have not been able to make significant inroads into the "whale" market for HS recruits. It appears to me that we have spent an inordinate amount of time chasing two recruits the last two years for no return. Vaughn and Diallo were, at one time, rumored to be near locks, yet neither ended up with us.
I don't know why we are not able to close on these types of players, other than those types of players always seem to end up at the same places, year-in and year-out. My question, to those of you who follow basketball recruiting closely, should we change strategies?
On a purely theoretical level, it seems that our failure to land these guys leaves us in a scramble mode too often. Admittedly, it is probably more planned within the program than it appears to a fan like me. But we do not seem to be able to land whales, and rely too much on the transfer. And it appeared to hurt us a bit this year with the up and down performance of BDJ - not to mentioned rumored internal issues. It would seem that we would be better off recruiting more Georges Niangs, Monte Morrises - 4 stars that will develop in a couple of years into real good players. It would also allow us to concentrate on the JC's earlier as well. Relying on the one-year and two year transfers leaves us vulnerable if it doesn't work out.
Any thoughts on why we seemingly have a hard time breaking through with that "next level" recruit?
