Thanks to a contact in the business, Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Manning came upon and recently offered a Class of 2018 lineman from the southwest. That recruit plans to be on hand in a couple weeks when the Cyclones take on Texas Tech.
Glendale (Ariz.) Deer Valley junior Joey Ramos said his work at the camp of a former NFL offensive lineman helped put him on Iowa State’s radar.
“I went to a little clinic that LeCharles Bentley was hosting with a bunch of high school kids,” said Ramos. “He told me I was going to be a great player, to keep working and stay humble. LeCharles and Tom Manning are really good friends and always talk. LeCharles brought up my name to Coach (Tom) Manning, so he messaged me on September 1st and said he’d love to get me on the phone soon.
“Then, Coach (Taylor) Mowser messaged me, got all of my contact information and wanted to get me on the phone as quick as possible. We talked for about an hour and he just asked me a bunch of questions. He asked me what I thought about Iowa State and I said I didn’t know much but that I couldn’t wait to come up there on November 19th for the game. He hit me with a little surprise that they wanted to offer me a scholarship."
The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Ramos, who picked up an offer from the Cyclones in early October, has remained in steady contact with Mowser in advance of his unofficial visit to Ames in a few weeks. The assistant wide receivers coach also shared with Ramos what the staff saw in its evaluation of him.
“He and I stay in touch about every other day and he wants to build that relationship,” Ramos said. “I’m probably going to get on the phone with Coach Manning in a couple days and then I can’t wait to see him later this month.
“He told me that all of them loved my aggressiveness and how I finish. They love how I act like a jerk out there. They love my tenacity and never letting anything pass up.”
Although he’ll get to know plenty about the I-State program during his visit, Ramos has started doing some research of his own.
“I like the fact that they’re a very humble team,” Ramos said. “They haven’t gotten as many wins lately, but have produced good athletes. They have one of the best offensive line coaches out there. I love the hometown feeling up in Ames and can’t wait to see it all.”
In addition to the one he received from ISU, Ramos has Power-5 offers from Nebraska and Utah. Fordham, Central Florida and South Alabama have also offered.
