A borderline four-star recruit in the 2020 class, who already knows plenty about Iowa State from the coaching staff’s recruiting background in the area, now has an offer from the program after a solid spring.
Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle rising junior Cameron Porter said he had been on the staff’s radar for some time, but finally put it all together over the past few months to put himself into the offer category.
“My freshman year going into my sophomore year, I went to a camp they held at Mount St. Joseph College and felt like I did really well,” said Porter. “I think the coaches liked me. They didn’t give me an offer out of the camp, but I think they kept their eye on me. I was blessed to have a really good sophomore year and I think they wanted to get the offer out early to me.”
The 5-foot-11, 208-pound Porter, who is currently a three-star recruit with a 5.7 Rivals rating, said he heard some positive feedback from his head coach during the spring period.
“My coach informed me that they really like my style and the way I ran the ball,” Porter said. “They felt I did a great job my sophomore year about how I ran, got stronger, bigger and faster from my freshman year. They saw the improvement that I made.”
Since head coach Matt Campbell’s crew arrived in Ames, Porter’s area has been a focus of the staff’s recruiting efforts and that’s not been lost on Porter.
“They’ve had great success recruiting Cincinnati and the players usually come in and play early,” Porter said. “Keontae Jones, DeShaunte Jones and David Montgomery are good players from Cincinnati that came in and played early. Iowa State is a great university.”
Having one of the top running backs in the nation currently in its stable, and reigning from a Cincinnati high school, has put the Cyclones in good shape.
“I love the offense,” Porter said. “I haven’t been there on campus, but I’ve seen pictures of the facilities and I really love it. I like how they run it downhill. David Montgomery is an awesome back that can also catch the ball out of the backfield. That’s really important to me. I also like to catch the ball in open space and make plays and run the ball downhill.”
Porter said he is planning to reconnect with the Cincinnati natives in Ames in the near future.
“I’m definitely going to try to get up there this summer and maybe get there for a game this fall,” he said. “I want to get on campus and get a feel for how it is.”
The running back, who also has P5 offers from Iowa and Louisville, tallied 924 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground as a sophomore while catching 21 passes for 161 yards.
