The last couple of days I have become immersed with navigating my family tree at FamilySearch. My great grandfather came over from the Alsace area of Germany, now France, so that was not a mystery. He never lost his German accent despite living in the US for about eight decades. But my origins on my father's side was more of a mystery.
Using the family tree part of FamilySearch I had to go back ten generations of males to find William Case, born in 1591 in Aylesham, Kent, England and died at sea aboard the ship Dorset while sailing in September 1635 from London to Barbados. His son Henry William Case was born in Southold, Suffolk, New York Colony, British Colonial America. three years before his father's death. Ruth and William had seven children. The first six born in England and the last, Henry William Case, born in the colonies. The sixth was born in 1630 and the seventh and last was born in 1632. So she made the trip between 1630 and 1632.
Could William have sent his wife Ruth James to the colonies ahead of William making the trip? Or did he make multiple ocean crossings? Ruth was born in Gravesend, Kent England in 1590 and died in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut, British Colonies America, date unknown.
So I guess William and Ruth James Case were the ancestors on my father's side that made the ocean crossing, although I'm uncertain that William ever made it.
I just followed the male side so far. I'll spend time drilling down on the female side later, but I'm afraid it could get to be an overwhelming task if I have to go back many generations and therefore more branches to close. My brother claims he traced our origins back to royalty, but I haven't gone back that far. I see William's grandfather was Sir Richard Case, although I don't know any details behind that title.
Who were your ancestors that first came to the US or colonies and what year? This is quite interesting if you have the time.
