I was just checking the 2020 population of cities in Iowa to see who is growing and who is not (I'm a Big Data guy), and I am amazed at how fast Ankeny is growing. Since 2010, Ankeny has gone from #11 in the state to #6 in the state. Ankeny has over 71K people now! In 2010 Waterloo was the 5th largest city in Iowa, now it is 9th! Iowa City, Ankeny, West Des Moines and Ames have all passed Waterloo! By the 2030 census, Ankeny likely will pass Davenport for 3rd largest city in Iowa, with more than 100K people. Marion now has over 41K people, and has passed Cedar Falls in size! Sioux City, Council Bluffs, and Dubuque had basically no growth at all since 2010. Here are the 2010 and 2020 numbers for the top cities:
2020 rank | City | 2020 pop | 2010 rank | 2010 pop |
1 | Des Moines | 210,723 | 1 | 203,433 |
2 | Cedar Rapids | 134,268 | 2 | 126,326 |
3 | Davenport | 100,934 | 3 | 99,685 |
4 | Sioux City | 83,193 | 4 | 82,684 |
5 | Iowa City | 73,998 | 6 | 67,862 |
