A host of Power-5 schools have lined up with offers for a versatile Florida prep defensive back in the Class of 2019.

Orlando Jones junior Daquan Evans said an Iowa State coach visited him at school over the spring and was sold on his ability to help the program.

“They offered when they came to the school,” said Evans. “The defensive line coach (Eli Rasheed) was down here and really liked what he saw. They like my film a lot and said I have a great size. They like everything, really. He said I’m number one on their board and they want to get me up there. We keep in contact. Iowa State…I like them.”

It was a pretty sudden emergence for the Cyclones in Evan’s recruitment, as he only found out a member of the staff would be down a short time before. Rasheed broke the news of Evan’s offer in a short conversation.

“I was talking to another coach on Twitter and he told me a coach would be coming down to see me,” Evans said. “One of my coaches called me when I was coming from lunch that an Iowa State coach was in the weight room. Later, he said I had an offer from Iowa State. We started talking about my recruitment a little bit and he said he liked my size, that I looked nice and to keep up the good work.”

In addition to ISU, Evans has P5 offers from Duke, Minnesota, Mississippi State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Evans said he likes what he saw of I-State, especially its defense, during 2017.

“I know last year they had a good little season and sent a couple of their guys to the (NFL),” he said. “I heard education is good up there, so that’s great. I like the football facility up there. It looks like everyone on the team is together and there’s no hatred around. It seems like a good atmosphere.”

“(The defense) plays fast, physical and aggressive. It’s the Big 12. It’s like a basketball league and everyone scores a lot of points, but Iowa State kept it down. If I do go to Iowa State, I would love to play against Oklahoma and that conference. I really like the defensive backs that are on the roster and could see myself in that system.”

Evans said he believes he would be a good fit in the Cyclone defense, given the staff searches for versatile defensive backs to fit a number of roles.

“I can play safety, nickel and corner, so I have a great advantage,” he said. “At my high school, I am the quarterback of the defense. I can read anything. With my special technique, I can play man coverage a lot. I’m long and there aren’t too many long corners in college ball. I’m still growing and could end up being about 6-foot-2.”

The prospect said he has yet to schedule any visits – official or unofficial – and is still in the process of evaluating his offers.

“The recruitment is going well,” Evans said. “Everybody is straight-up equal right now and there aren’t any favorites. I’m looking at everybody, because they took the time to give me a scholarship to better my career and education.”
