An offered Kansas prep offensive lineman visited Ames this past Saturday for the Cyclones’ spring practice finale.
Lakin junior guard Hadley Panzer made another trip from western Kansas to ISU and said he delved more into academics this time around.
“I sat in on the team meetings and got to listen to Coach (Matt) Campbell talk before they had their offense and defense meetings,” said Panzer. “After he got done talking, we got on the golf carts and toured the campus a little bit.
“The previous time I was there, we did the weight room and jerseys and stuff like that. This time, I really wanted to see more of the academic side. I sat down with the Ag Business (tutor) and that was awesome to talk to her and explore the areas of what I want to study.”
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Panzer said the day was capped off by the intrasquad scrimmage, which brought I-State’s 2019 spring practice slate to a close.
“That was great to go to and it was my first time seeing them hit and get after it,” Panzer said. “Coach Campbell said it was the closest they could get to game day as possible, so it was great to see them competing out there. I also liked seeing a few Kansas boys out there.”
Panzer is one in a growing number of Kansas high school prospects that ISU has targeted in recent years. The Cyclones, who gained a commitment from Kansas standout offensive lineman Hayden Pauls earlier this month, offered Panzer in March following another unofficial visit.
The Kansas 2020 big man, who also has an offer from Akron, said he’s encouraged by the amount of attention his state has gotten from the coaching staff and caught up with highly-regarded Wichita newcomer Breece Hall during Saturday’s stop.
“I think it’s great that Iowa State is coming into Kansas and exploring the athletes down here,” he said. “There are a lot of great athletes down here, like Marcus Hicks and a bunch of others.
“When I was on my visit, I talked to Breece. He had a really good play in the scrimmage. He was on the five-yard line and I had a chance to tell him ‘great play’. He talked to me a little bit, so that was cool. He told me what they’re building there is something special. I definitely believe what he said. That was the first time I’ve ever talked to him.”
Panzer also spent time with the Cyclones’ offensive line coach Jeff Myers mapping out the next few months.
“He kind of discussed where we’re at,” Panzer said. “Talking to him was reassuring and reaffirmed how strongly I feel about Iowa State. He told me he really wants me to come up there and get some coaching from them and ultimately just get out to see them throughout (the next few months). I plan on going to the camp on June 1st. I’m excited to see them some more.”
