Much has been written lately about Jamie's skills at hiring coaches. Hiring is difficult. Hiring a highly visible, publicly scrutinized employee like a coach is a job I wouldn't want. ADs know that comes with the job when they sign up and they are compensated for that task. As much as I loathe all things hawkeye, Bump Elliott was widely regarded as a top shelf AD during his 1970-1991 run at iowa. iowa football was a national joke and Elliott's first two hires were Frank Lauterbur (fired after three seasons) and Bob Cummings (whacked after four seasons). He hit the home run with hayden fry. Bump going one for three shows just how difficult it is to hire a coach when the sport you are hiring for has struggled for decades. That doesn't mean ADs can keep hiring unsuccessful coaches for years & years. I just wanted to illustrate the uncertainty and difficulty in hiring a coach.
