A versatile 2017 running back from Southern California is spending time in the Midwest and has visited two Power 5 schools.

Chance Bell, a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder from Burbank’s John Burroughs High School, flew into Chicago on Saturday and then took part in a camp session at Illinois on Sunday. After visiting the Illini program and making an overnight stop in Davenport, Bell journeyed on to Ames and an Iowa State unofficial visit on Monday.

The SoCal kid said he has been enjoying his time in America’s heartland.

“I really like it out here, it’s been nice,” said Bell. “I’d been to Illinois once before when I was little, but this was my first time in Iowa.”

Bell said he had a lengthy and productive face-to-face meeting with ISU head coach Matt Campbell on Monday, learning more about the role the Cyclone coaching staff would see for him.

“I had a good long chat with Coach Campbell, the head coach,” Bell said. “He said I am a really dynamic player and they could use me in other ways besides just running back and carrying the ball. They said they would line me up in the slot and do other things with me because I can do more. He said he likes that I am different from the other backs they have.”

Bell said he spent most of his time on campus with Iowa State’s director of high school relations, Mitchell Moore. According to Bell, the assistant coaches he has talked to most during the recruiting process have been D.K. McDonald and Louis Ayeni.

“Coach Ayeni was supposed to come by my high school in the spring, but their plans changed and he wasn’t able to make it,” Bell explained. “We’ve still be in contact. We talk a lot. I’ve also talked to Coach McDonald a lot, too.”

Bell said he nearing a commitment decision with three top schools in mind: Hawaii, Illinois and Iowa State. Although he has not been able to visit Hawaii in person, he did spent time with the Warrior coaching staff at a satellite camp in California. He has also been offered by Idaho, New Mexico and several FCS programs.
