After hosting a quarterback recruit for a game day visit earlier this month, Iowa State is set to host the prospect again in November for the Thursday night game against Oklahoma.

Oak Park (Mich.) Class of 2019 standout Dwan Mathis, who earned an offer after a solid performance during a Saturday Night Lights practice in late June, said he communicates frequently with Cyclone coaches.

“When I first got the offer, I was excited because it was my first Big 12 offer,” said Mathis. “It was a major offer from a bigger school. At first I was getting more MAC schools and for that to be my first Big 12 school it was amazing and a dream come true, something I’ve been working for my entire life.”

In addition to the one he has from the Cyclones, Mathis has offers from Kentucky, Cincinnati and Akron.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Mathis has certainly shown the love on his end, returning for a Baylor game day visit and scheduling another stop in Ames on November 3rd to watch I-State face Oklahoma. He said the visit earlier this month made quite an impression.

“This time gave me more of an opportunity to know the coaches,” he said. “The first time I went down there, I really didn’t get to know the coaches. The second time I got the feel for the staff, people that were there, how the coaches really talk to the players and how Coach (Matt) Campbell is.

“The facilities are nice and are state of the art. The atmosphere was great and the fans really love the football players down there. College football is really big down there because there are no NFL teams.”

Being that he’s a quarterback, visiting for the Baylor game gave Mathis a nice look at how the Cyclones want to do things offensively.

“They run the quarterback a lot and give the quarterback a lot of options,” he said. “The quarterback seems to have a lot of leeway on if he wants to keep it or give it. I really liked seeing that because I like having the ball in my hands to make plays.”

Although he’s still well over two years away from signing a letter of intent, Mathis said ISU is an early favorite.

“Iowa State is one of my top schools because of the relationship that they have with me and how they treat me when I come down there,” he said. “I’d say they are my number one school.”
