A pair of in-state linemen in the Class of 2018 is very high on the Cyclones' wish list, and was on campus on Sunday for the team's scrimmage.

West Des Moines Dowling Catholic's Zach Ross already has an offer from Iowa State and joined up with Creston's Trevor Downing on the visit. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Ross said the structure of the workout especially caught his eye.

"The practice was very organized and I loved watching the scrimmage with ones versus ones, two versus twos and threes versus threes," said Ross. "The offensive line looks pretty solid. Coach (Matt) Campbell said they have a pretty good center.

"The scrimmage was high-tempo and music was playing. It looked like they were having fun. I didn't really think they would play music during the scrimmage, but they did and it kind of simulated the loud noise you'd have from fans."

Ross, who said he's also getting more attention these days from the Cyclones' in-state rival Iowa, said he spent some quality time with Director of High School Relations Mitch Moore.

"I sat in the office with Coach Mitch Moore and we watched TV," Ross said. "We talked about Iowa State and what's going on with the recruiting process. Trevor Downing was in there too, and Coach Moore said we could be their tackle and guard in the 2018 recruiting class."

Since offering Ross a scholarship earlier this year, the Cyclones have certainly had no regrets as the offensive lineman earned an award at the Big Man Camp in Ames.

"I went to two camps at Iowa State over the summer," he said. "I was at the Big Man Camp on June 20th and earned MVP. I got to stand up in front of the everyone and they gave me a plaque. I think I showed the coaches how physical I was and my technique was pretty good."

Ross said he also attended the first Saturday Night Lights camp in early June.

As for his recruitment, the Dowling Catholic rising junior said it's pretty much just the Cyclones and Hawkeyes at this point.

"I haven't gotten any offers since my one from Iowa State," Ross said. "I'm hearing a little more from Iowa now."
