I was watching the 2005 Iowa game on CyclonesTv last night, the one where Drew Tate was self-concussed, and the thing that struck me was the number of good to great LBs we had. On the field at various times for us were Adam Carper, Matt Robertson, Jamarr Buchannan, Tim Dobbins and Alvin Bowen. Bowen was a sophomore then and only playing on special teams, but he was making plays. Also on the team, but not mentioned during the broadcast were Tyronne McKenzie and Jesse Smith, who was a freshman at that time.

Robertson was a beast in that game and Carper had several good plays. Dobbins laid out Jason Manson, the backup for Tate, in a picture-perfect tackle, slamming him to the ground just as he released the ball. The commentators, Mike Tirrico and someone else, were oohing and ahhhing about that hit. And I always thought Buchanan was one of our best, most underappreciated LBs, especially his senior year, which was 2005.

What I wouldn't give to have LBs like that on the team today.
