Iowa State added a key piece to the future of its defense on Thursday night by getting a commitment from a Class of 2017 defender from SEC territory.
Clarksdale (Miss.) three-star LEO linebacker Cordarrius Bailey, who has a Rivals rating of 5.7, announced via social media his future intentions.
“It was really about the love and support that Iowa State has shown to me and my family,” said Bailey. “The coaches really did a great job recruiting me. I did a lot of research on Iowa State, looked at them every day and was pleased with what I saw. I’m excited about my commitment to Iowa State. I’m going to have a great senior season and handle my business in the classroom.”
Prior to announcing the commitment on his Twitter page, Bailey said he called the I-State coaching staff to give them the heads up.
“They said they were pleased and grateful that I decided to make a commitment,” Bailey said. “Coach (Matt) Campbell was really excited. I told him and he couldn’t believe it. He’s ready for me to come to Iowa State and perform for them next fall.”
In addition to the Cyclones, the 6-foot-3, 207-pound Bailey also had Power-5 offers from Louisville and Mississippi State to go along with a host of others at the FBS level.
Bailey had attended high school in Lincoln, Nebraska, prior to moving to Mississippi for the 2016-17 school year. He said it was his familiarity with the Midwest that made the decision to play college football in Iowa an easier decision.
“I’m really excited getting the opportunity to come back up north to play football,” Bailey said. “Iowa State is a lot closer to Nebraska and what I’m used to. That made my commitment much easier, because I’d be back in my environment. I have an uncle and cousins that still live in Nebraska.”
ISU is targeting Bailey to fill perhaps the most important position on its defense, the LEO linebacker spot which is asked to fulfill several different roles.
“I’m really excited about getting the chance to possibly play early in my career,” Bailey said. “They’re looking at me to play the LEO position. I’ve done some research on their defense and think that would be a good role.”
The fact the Cyclones were able to land a three-star such as Bailey without having stepped foot on campus is also encouraging for a coaching staff in its first year on the job in Ames. Bailey will finally get the chance to visit the weekend of September 24th for the San Jose State game.
